Alas, the American Academy of Pediatrics’ leadership has found yet another left-wing cause into which to divert our membership dues — Marian Wright Edelman’s
“Stand for Children” march on Washington. Mrs. Edelman is one of the chief architects of our modern welfare state, and now she is calling for more of the same.

Virtually every index of child welfare has worsened during the last 30 years — child poverty, single parent households, teen pregnancies, juvenile crime, child neglect and abuse, drug abuse, and educational failures. This is despite spending $5.4 trillion of money collected from responsible, hard working, tax paying families who have watched their total tax burden climb to 40% of their income. This has forced mothers into the work force and their children into day care.

Isn’t it time for a different approach?
